Word just came out today that Yahoo! has acquired Koprol, dubbed the Foursquare of Indonesia. Though actual figures have not been announced, this is a boon for the Asian startup scene with 2 acquisition announcements in the spate of 5 days, first the Sprice.com acquisition by Travelport and now this one. Check out my previous coverage of Koprol and get a chance to personally meet them at echelon 2010. On the Yahoo acquisition, Koprol team mentions,
Koprol is a unique social network, but is also a perfect match for Yahoo!. Koprol technology is a unique blend of location-based conversations, a social city guide, and a cross platform mobile application. It’s well suited for Indonesia and the emerging markets in general. Koprol fits Yahoo!’s vision for Indonesia and extends Yahoo!’s portfolio of social and mobile products. For us, joining a company like Yahoo! was an easy decision to make and will take Koprol to the next level. We are very excited.
We wrote about Indonesian having one of the highest internet penetration rates in SE Asia and their vibrant technology eco-system. Lately, we’ve noticed a steady trend of technology juggernauts setting their foot in South East Asia, case in point being, Facebook setting up office in Singapore and Amazon setting up their cloud infrastructure.
Fajar Budiprasetyo, CEO and co-founder of Koprol “This is a great success story for the online community in Indonesia and demonstrates that innovation is recognized wherever it occurs.” This is fantastic news indeed and is a great boost to the startup community in Asia and we hope to hear more such stories from this part of the world.
