housewarming_imgEditor’s Note: Wong Meng Weng co-founded pobox.com and karmasphere.com during his time in the US. In Singapore, he works with a venture-funded Red Herring Global 100 company on new product strategy. He has taken over 10,000 photographs of random strangers. When he takes yours, you will like it so much it will become your profile pic, or your money back. Post edited by Luther Goh.

For months, hackerspace.sg was little more than a gleam in the eyes of the geek community in Singapore.

But it is no longer just a dream. As of today, we now have 1,200 square feet of space to call home.

And to help make it feel homey, we want to invite you to the housewarming next Saturday, Nov 21.

Over time, we’ll be inviting all the geeks in Singapore to call it home too – sysadmins and programmers, from Ruby to Java to Python and PHP. All persuasions are welcome. (Except OCaml. Those guys are just too weird.)

We’re also reaching out to hackers beyond software: cutting-edge artists, musicians, writers, photographers, designers, DIY modellers, radio control hobbyists and even food hackers — after all, this is Singapore.

The wider intellectual scene will be invited too! We’ll be reaching out to groups as diverse as Acceleration Aware (Stefan Pernar’s Singularity salon), Ryan Jer’s Humanist Meetup, and some of the more mysterious subcultures who embrace alternative lifestyle sand unconventional, brooding sexuality.

And we’ll host movie nights and hackathons and co-working, oh my!

Through diversity we hope to contribute to the New Asian Renaissance of creativity and innovation. After all, the Singapore Government has spoken in favor of nonconformism. We, the hackers of Singapore, hear and obey.

But back to the point. The reason for this post is our upcoming housewarming, which will also be the BarCampSingapore4 afterparty.

On Saturday Nov 21, BarCamp Singapore4 will happen at IDA’s premises at Suntec.

The moment the last talk at Barcamp ends, everybody’s invited to head over to the Hackerspace to check out our new digs. There’ will be drinks at Hackerspace, and dinner at a nearby restaurant — both graciously sponsored by Yahoo!

So hang out at the hackerspace until you get hungry, then go get food, then come back and play Guitar Hero all night long … PS3 and Wii gamers are also welcome. In fact, PS3 and Wii consoles are also welcome … anyone have an extra set? :)

BarCamp happens November 21st during the day from 9 to 5; the after party begins at 6.

Location: 70A Bussorah Street (nearest MRT: Bugis)
    Date: Saturday 20091121
    Time: 1800-2300
Dress: black tie. Or a t-shirt with some obscure technical joke. Or anything, really. Hackers wear whatever they want. Dress codes are for mundanes.
Dinner: at a restaurant to be confirmed, but probably Nabins at Sultan Gate
