The folks at Amazon have been keen on setting up an Asia Pacific cloud infrastructure for some time now. My first meeting with them was back in Nov 2008, where I met Joe Minarik and Jake Anderson to share more about the startup and developer ecosystem here. Since then, the local government agencies (kudos to them!), together with various members of the local startup and web technology community have been working hard to make sure that Amazon picks Singapore as the primary location for the cloud infrastructure. We are glad to announce that the efforts have paid off really well and the primary beneficiaries for these will be the web technology startup entrepreneurs. Below is the official announcement from Amazon:
AWS has announced an expansion of its services into an Asia-Pacific region in the first half of 2010, enabling businesses to deploy compute and storage resources in close proximity to their end-users in the region. AWS customers will be able to access AWS’s infrastructure services from multiple Availability Zones in Singapore in the first half of 2010, then in other Availability Zones within Asia over the second half of 2010. AWS services available at the launch of the Asia-Pacific region will include Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Amazon SimpleDB, Amazon Relational Database Service, Amazon Simple Queue Service, Amazon Elastic MapReduce, and Amazon CloudFront.
“Developers and businesses located in Asia, as well as those with a multi-national presence, have been eager for Asia-based infrastructure to minimize latency and optimize performance,” said Adam Selipsky, Vice President of Amazon Web Services. “We’re very excited to announce the expansion of AWS infrastructure into Asia to help our customers plan their technology investments and better serve their end-users in Asia.”

@Meng: how does it make bringing up an Internet company in Singapore “twice as easy as before”? Haven’t ec2 and related services been available to Singapore companies all this time anyway? Yes, it reduces latency, but, for most services, latency involved in servers running on the west coast of the US would be fairly manageable to begin with – very few services need super low latencies (other than the obvious, such as gaming platforms).
Genuinely interested in your thoughts. What have I missed, and how’s this such a big deal (for the average developer, not coming at this from a nationalistic perspective) that it makes up for the entrepass mess?

seems still to be some paranoia in singapore about true internet freedom .. just one example, try to get data on a prepaid sim card, you cannot. you need another sim card, and that one won’t make calls .. so two phones …
both china and india are not that paranoid ..
of course, there is censorship too, but i think that is common knowledge ..
wonder what constraints they will put on amazon ..

Hi Varun, actually reduced latency is a big factor. Having tried setting up LAMP and Windows servers on the West Coast/East Coast servers, I would say that the latency is pretty bad and running remote desktop onto my Windows instance on the EC2 servers is practically unusable. This is a surprising piece of news to me and also good news for me due to the reduced latency
Gang Lu said :
interesting point, Gregory.
So what if Amazon came to China, or it never will?

Wong Meng Weng said :
aside from latency issues, there is the psychological component of having it all in-country. there may be regulatory considerations, eg. data privacy, that have inhibited SG companies from putting things in the US or EU.
also, if an SG business wanted to import a couple of terabytes of data into EC2/S3 for Map/Reduce dataprocessing, keeping the transit in-country lowers the transfer time significantly (though not the fees) … it brings that sort of effort into the realm of feasibility.
Wong Meng Weng said :
while US startups have known for years that it makes sense to just go Amazon, SG startups have persisted in exploring previous-generation managed hosting or colo solutions, partly through cultural inertia and (false) beliefs that to get AWS service you need a US credit card.
Now that AWS is in SG every web startup here will be moved to at least check it out.
I’d be happy to lead an AWS user’s group in SG if there isn’t already one here. My current company makes heavy use of EC2, SimpleDB, SQS, and S3. My previous startup is now a leading provider of Hadoop professional services.

@China Law: Yes you are right. A few reasons there.
(1) It ain’t that cheap for rapid prototyping and for very early stage web startups to have their stuff on the web.
(2) The main cloud infrastructure is currently based in US. Though the latency issues aren’t that bad, it’s still noticeable. Having your site there may not be the best idea, if your primary users are in Asia. That’s why the Asia infrastructure is so important as it’ll eradicate that problem.
(3) I think there’s still a slight risk aversion towards having your data in the cloud. That will take time to go away due to cultural issues and old habits. But once you have enough decent case studies for Asia, you’ll see more web companies migrating to the cloud. The benefits far outweigh the pitfalls.
