Barcamp II Singapore was held recently on the night of 21st May at NUS Extension, lasting all the way from 6:30 to 10:30. It was a smashing success which saw a huge turnout of ~140 people, with a spectrum of IDM (Interactive Digital Media) professionals all the way to casual enthusiasts in attendance.

It was an opportunity for like-minded individuals throughout the industry to gather for a night of light-hearted discussion and product sharing. The event started off with a dinner/networking session, setting in the atmosphere for the night.
This was followed by 2 keynotes, the first of which was by Andrew McGlinchey from Google who kept the audience interested and engaged with his presentation on exciting features google has provided us with.

Following this was a presentation by Gerald Lim from Bak2u who spoke to us about the importance of mobile phone security especially with the increasing use of these devices for data and information storage. But if less time was spent on the introductions and statistics, and more time spent on the product itself, it could have been a more worthwhile presentation.
2 Breakout sessions followed this with one session on Maps chaired by Jon Peterson, and the other sessions on Mobile Applications chaired by Chandrasekar. The Maps session featured demos from companies such as SinGeo, Shoplette, Homespace, Lilihood and iwinked.
The Mobiles breakout session incorporated demos by comapies such as Tencube, Mobile sorcery, and Widgeous. Widgeous caused such great excitement – due to the fact that they launched their product 45 min before the event – that they were asked to do an encore at the MAPS session also. Preetam Rai also added a short presentation on tagging a real life object and generate a shared communication/sharing of thoughts between users of that object/place/item
The event ended off with many of the attendees breaking up for discussions over a supper session at around 10.30pm.
Such events are advantageous to the IDM industry as they provide not only the physical space for human interaction to take place, but at the same time also foster creative energies by encouraging an emphasis on knowledge sharing. Hopefully, Barcamp II Singapore will provide the momentum for more of such events to be organized in the future.
